5-Day Expedition to Manu National Park

Your Day-by-Day Journey
DAY 1

Cusco – Paucartambo – Tres Cruces Viewpoint – Atalaya Port – Amazon Treehouse Lodge

Meals: Lunch, Dinner Amazon Treehouse Lodge
  • Early Morning (05:00 AM): Your adventure begins as Cusco still sleeps. Boarding our private transport, we leave the Andean peaks behind and wind our way toward the Amazon basin. Our first stop is Paucartambo (2,906 m / 9,534 ft), a historic colonial town frozen in time. Here, we recharge with hot coffee or fresh juice accompanied by freshly baked artisan bread.
  • Morning: Reaching the Tres Cruces (Acjanaco, 3,900 m / 12,795 ft) viewpoint places you directly on the border between the high Andes and the vast Amazonian geography of Peru. Standing at the official entrance to Manu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Peru, you will witness the mesmerizing “sea of clouds”—an endless white blanket hiding the wild territory ahead.
  • Midday: As we descend through the misty cloud forest, we stop at the Hummingbird Garden for a refreshing lunch. Enjoy your meal surrounded by the acrobatic flight of dozens of iridescent hummingbirds buzzing inches away among orchids and exotic blooms.
  • Afternoon: At Atalaya Port, we leave the road behind and board a motorized riverboat to navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River for two hours, getting our first true sense of the Amazon’s immense scale. Upon reaching the Palotoa River basin, we switch to a traditional wooden peke-peke boat designed to glide smoothly over shallow waters.
  • Sunset Arrival: As the last rays of sunlight filter through the forest canopy, we step ashore at the Amazon Treehouse Lodge. Welcome to your private sanctuary elevated high in the rainforest canopy.
DAY 2

Amazon Treehouse – Macaw Clay Lick – Rainforest Trek & Oxbow Lake

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Amazon Treehouse Lodge
  • Early Dawn: We set out on the water just as the jungle wakes up. Positioning our boat quietly in front of the cliff, we wait for the first light of day. Suddenly, the sky fills with wings and calls: hundreds of parrots and parakeets descend in colorful flocks to feed on the mineral-rich clay walls. This Macaw Clay Lick at Manu National Park is a raw, wild spectacle that marks an unforgettable start to the day.
  • Morning: Return to the lodge for a warm, hearty breakfast before heading deep into the forest. There are no pre-packaged walks here—we follow living trails with an expert native guide who teaches us to read muddy tracks, smell the forest, and identify ancestral medicinal plants. With patience and quiet footing, we track two-toed sloths high in the canopy, anteaters, and troop movements of capuchin or woolly monkeys.
  • Amazonian Lunch: Head back to the treehouse dining hall to enjoy a fresh meal prepared with regional ingredients that celebrate authentic jungle cuisine.
  • Afternoon: Trek toward a peaceful lake (cocha). This is the exclusive territory of the prehistoric-looking shansho (hoatzin bird) and the calm waters where white caimans subtly break the surface.
  • Night Safari: As dusk falls, switch on your headlamps to experience Manu wildlife in Peru after dark. Walking slowly through a symphony of insects and amphibians, we search for glass frogs, giant tarantulas, and the elusive nocturnal creatures that rule the night.
DAY 3

Deep Jungle Trek – Remote Expedition to the Black River

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Amazon Treehouse Lodge
  • Morning: Today we venture into one of the most remote, pristine zones of the Peruvian Amazon. Boarding our peke-peke, we navigate upstream along the Palotoa River to the mouth of the Black River (Río Negro). This secluded waterway serves as an exclusive gateway into the untouched primary rainforest buffering Manu National Park Peru. Keep a close watch along the riverbanks for egrets, kingfishers, and monkey families leaping through the canopy overhead.
  • Expedition Trek: Equipped with rubber boots and guided by a native tracker, begin an adventurous expedition trek along off-the-beaten-path wilderness trails. Crossing crystal streams and navigating muddy terrain, we enter an ecosystem dominated by ancient forest giants like the Lupuna (Ceiba) and Catahua trees. Learn about Amazonian ethnobotanical secrets, natural remedies (Cat’s Claw, Dragon’s Blood), and how to identify footprints of elusive wildlife like tapias, peccaries, or woolly monkeys.
  • Jungle Picnic & Return: Pause in a forest clearing for an open-air picnic lunch surrounded by the raw sounds of nature. After a well-deserved rest, return on foot and by boat to the comfort of your elevated canopy cabin at the Amazon Treehouse Lodge, arriving in time to unwind before dusk.
DAY 4

River Tubing Adventure – Cross-River Trail & Tarantula Hunt

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Amazon Treehouse Lodge
  • Morning: After breakfast, gear up for a refreshing and relaxing water adventure. Grab an inner tube and float down the crystal-clear waters of the Palotoa River, drifting gently with the current while macaws fly overhead and monkeys swing through the riverside trees on one of the top-rated Manu jungle tours.
  • Midday: Return to the lodge for a nourishing lunch and peaceful hammock time overlooking the forest.
  • Afternoon & Night Safari: Cross the river by boat to explore an untouched, non-touristy sector on the opposite side of the reserve. When night falls, switch on your torches for an exciting night hunt in search of the giant Amazonian tarantula, glowing bioluminescent insects, tree frogs, and nocturnal reptiles.
DAY 5

Amazon Treehouse Lodge – Atalaya Port – Paucartambo – Cusco

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Return Journey
  • Morning: Say goodbye to the Amazon Treehouse Lodge over a hot cup of coffee while watching morning mist drift above the jungle canopy. Board the riverboat one last time to cross the tranquil Palotoa River and the currents of the Madre de Dios River toward Atalaya Port, where our private land transport awaits to begin the Andean ascent.
  • Midday: Leave the Amazonian lowlands behind as we wind back up through the mist-shrouded cloud forest of Manu Park. We stop in the picturesque colonial village of Paucartambo to enjoy a traditional farewell lunch amidst stone streets and living history.
  • Afternoon (Arrival in Cusco): Carrying unforgettable memories of wild landscapes and authentic encounters, we complete our high-mountain crossing back to the imperial city of Cusco (estimated arrival at 05:00 PM). Enjoy a direct drop-off at your hotel, marking the end of an extraordinary expedition.
