Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Paucartambo – Tres Cruces – Atalaya Port – Amazon Treehouse

Your Amazon expedition in Manu begins with a 5:00 a.m. pick-up from your Cusco hotel. You will then be taken from the rugged slopes of the Andes to the lush Amazon rainforest. Your first stop will be Paucartambo, which sits at an altitude of 2,906 metres. Here, you will be served a typical breakfast of coffee or juice. After enjoying breakfast and taking in the magic of Paucartambo, you will head to the ‘Tres Cruces’ or ‘Acjanco’ viewpoint.

Halfway through your journey through Manu National Park, you will ascend to 3,900 metres to marvel at the view of the Amazon basin stretching out below.

Over the next few hours, you will begin to explore the Manu cloud forest. This forest is home to unique animals such as capuchin monkeys, woolly monkeys, and Peru’s national bird: the cock-of-the-rock. Our drive will end at Puerto de Atalaya, where we will board a motorboat for a two-hour journey down the Madre de Dios River to its confluence with the Palotoa River. From there, we will continue exploring the river in a smaller boat designed for shallow waters. At sunset, we will arrive at the Amazon Treehouse.

Day 2Amazon Treehouse - Jungle Tour - Macaw Clay Lick

On the second day, we’ll start the day before sunrise. Our first activity will be to visit the parrot and macaw clay lick, which is a must-see attraction in Manu National Park. The cliff is filled with parrots and macaws that flock here to get the nutrients they need for the day — they never disappoint!

The clay contains specific minerals that help these birds clean and heal themselves.

After breakfast at the Amazon Treehouse, we’ll head out to explore one of the trails. There you will find some fantastic medicinal plants. As always, the tour guide will explain their uses along the way.

The deeper you venture into the forest, the more wildlife you’ll spot, including snakes, insects, sloths and anteaters.

Enjoy a buffet lunch featuring jungle cuisine.

In the afternoon, we’ll explore one of the lakes, home to white caiman and snakes, before enjoying an exciting night-time excursion.

The Amazon rainforest is beautiful. I really liked going to the Macaw Clay licks. The short jungle trips were also fascinating.
