Your Day-by-Day Journey
DAY 1
Descent into the Amazon Rainforest
- 04:30 AM: Private pickup in Cusco to begin our journey through the Andes. We make a breakfast stop in the colonial town of Paucartambo before reaching the Acjanaco Pass (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), the high-mountain gateway into Manu National Park.
- Morning: Descend through the mist-shrouded Cloud Forest, surrounded by wild orchids, tree ferns, woolly monkeys, and the vibrant display of Peru’s national bird, the Andean cock-of-the-rock.
- Midday: After a scenic lunch along the route, we arrive at the Atalaya Port to board our motorized boat down the Alto Madre de Dios River. We then transfer to a traditional peke-peke boat to navigate the pristine, shallow waters of the Palotoa River.
- Night: Arrival at the Amazon Treehouse Lodge. Enjoy dinner followed by an exciting night walk equipped with flashlights to track nocturnal wildlife, including tree frogs, tarantulas, and glowing eyes in the dark canopy.
DAY 2
Macaw Clay Lick & Ancestral Ethnobotany
- At Dawn: Early morning excursion to the Macaw Clay Lick at Manu National Park along the Palotoa River. Witness hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws gathering along the riverbanks to feed on mineral-rich clay.
- Morning: Enjoy a rainforest breakfast in our open-air dining space before embarking on a guided ethnobotanical hike through primary forest. Your expert guide will reveal medicinal plants, toxic flora, and ancient jungle remedies beneath giant canopy trees.
- Afternoon: Relaxing lunch back at the lodge, followed by an afternoon visit to an lake teeming with Amazonian wildlife.
- Night: Night tracking hike to search for nocturnal microfauna, bioluminescent fungi, and hunting spiders.
DAY 3
Entering the Manu Reserved Zone
- At Dawn: Board our boat toward the world-renowned Manu Reserved Zone. Enjoy breakfast on board as the sun rises over the Alto Madre de Dios River.
- Morning: Pass the Limonal Ranger Station to enter the winding Manu River. This pristine stretch offers the highest probability for jaguar sightings as they bask on golden sandbars, alongside capybaras and massive black caimans.
- Night: Arrival at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, run directly by the native Matsigenka community. Dinner and overnight stay surrounded by the sounds of the untouched jungle.
DAY 4
Giant River Otters & Ancient Rainforest Trails
- At Dawn: Early morning navigation by silent catamaran across Cocha Salvador during park-designated hours. This tranquil oxbow lake is the protected sanctuary for endangered giant river otters, large black caimans, and the prehistoric hoatzin bird (shansho).
- Afternoon: Hike through primary rainforest trails to visit a forest clay lick and observe vibrant bird species.
- Night: Guided night walk along the ancestral trails surrounding the lodge to track nocturnal mammals and insects.
DAY 5
Deep Exploration & Wilderness Camping at Pakitza
- Morning: Navigate further upriver into the remote interior toward Pakitza, the furthest official station for ecoturismo inside Manu National Park.
- Afternoon: Set up our riverside tent camp in Pakitza. Embark on a technical wildlife-tracking hike to spot fresh tracks of jaguars, tapirs, and peccaries.
- Night: Mammals Clay Lick at Manu National Park Night Expedition. Equipped with rubber boots and headlamps, quietly position yourself near the clay lick to observe tapirs, peccaries, and nocturnal predators coming to feed. Overnight stay in wilderness tents under the stars.
DAY 6
Journey from the Deep Jungle
- At Dawn: Pack up camp and begin our morning return navigation along the Manu River during prime wildlife hunting hours, maximizing opportunities for jaguar sightings along the riverbanks. Breakfast is served on board.
- Afternoon: Cruise down the Alto Madre de Dios River to the Palotoa River mouth, transferring to our peke-peke boat to return to the Amazon Treehouse Lodge.
- Night: Farewell dinner, relaxation, and overnight stay in elevated treehouse rooms.
DAY 7
River Tubing & Traditional Piranha Fishing
- Morning: Guided trek to a hidden jungle lagoon to experience traditional piranha fishing (catch-and-release).
- Midday: Enjoy a traditional jungle lunch (Juane) paired with a cold Peruvian beer at the lodge.
- Afternoon: River Tubing Adventure: Float down the clear currents of the Palotoa River on inner tubes, taking in the sights and sounds of the jungle canopy from the water.
- Night: Final nocturnal tracking excursion around the lodge grounds.
DAY 8
Return Journey to Cusco
- Morning: Final breakfast at the lodge. Transfer by peke-peke and motorized boat back to Atalaya Port, where our private vehicle awaits.
- Afternoon / Evening: Drive back up through the Cloud Forest and across the Andes, stopping for lunch along the route. Arrive in Cusco at approximately 05:00 PM with direct drop-off at your hotel.
