Expedition Itinerary
Descending into the Lost World of Manu National Park
- Your epic journey begins at 4:30 AM in Cusco. Leaving the city behind, we travel toward the picturesque Andean town of Paucartambo, where we stop for a traditional breakfast before continuing our journey.
- We then ascend to Acjanaco Pass, at approximately 3,900 meters (12,795 ft) above sea level. This spectacular mountain pass marks the transition from the Andes to the tropical ecosystems of Manu National Park.
- As we cross the pass, the scenery changes dramatically. The high-altitude landscape gives way to the mysterious cloud forest, one of the most fascinating ecosystems in the Manu Rainforest Peru. Here, you may have the opportunity to spot the spectacular Andean cock-of-the-rock, colorful birds and several species of monkeys.
- Around midday, we stop for lunch surrounded by the vibrant activity of dozens of hummingbirds in a beautiful hummingbird garden.
- Later, we arrive at Puerto Atalaya, where we board a motorized boat and begin navigating the majestic Madre de Dios River. Enjoy the warm Amazonian breeze, spectacular rainforest scenery and the first signs that you have entered the incredible world of Manu Wildlife Peru.
- We then change to a traditional peke-peke boat and continue along the peaceful Palotoa River. As the sun begins to set, we arrive at the exclusive Amazon Treehouse, your unique jungle retreat surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Parrot Clay Lick & Manu Wildlife Peru Experience
- The rainforest awakens at sunrise as we head toward a spectacular Amazonian parrot clay lick. Here, hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws may gather in one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in the Amazon. Watch as these magnificent birds descend into the forest in a breathtaking explosion of color, movement and sound. This unforgettable experience is one of the highlights of any Manu National Park tour.
- After the clay lick visit, we return to the lodge for a fresh breakfast overlooking the jungle.
- Later in the morning, we explore bamboo trails and rainforest paths while tracking wildlife. Depending on weather conditions and luck, we may encounter sloths, armadillos, monkeys, peccaries and caimans hidden among the vegetation and wetlands. - In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing tubing adventure along the Palotoa River. Drift gently through the tropical rainforest while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
- After sunset, the jungle takes on a completely different character. Equipped with flashlights and accompanied by our experienced guides, we set out on a fascinating night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife, including frogs, insects, reptiles and other creatures that become active after dark.
Into the Untamed Heart of the Manu Reserved Zone – Black Caimans
- At dawn, we board our traditional peke-peke boat and travel along the Palotoa River before connecting with the Madre de Dios River. Enjoy breakfast on board as the Amazonian sunrise illuminates the rainforest.
- We continue downstream before changing direction and entering the legendary Manu Reserved Zone, one of the most pristine and protected rainforest areas in Peru.
- The Manu Reserved Zone is home to an incredible variety of species, including jaguars, giant black caimans, capybaras, river turtles and several species of monkeys.
- One of today’s highlights is Cocha Otorongo. We climb the observation tower above the rainforest canopy to enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the oxbow lake and surrounding jungle. This remote environment offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.
- As afternoon approaches, we arrive at the legendary Casa Matsiguenka, an Amazonian lodge managed by the local Matsiguenka Indigenous community. Located deep within the rainforest, this unique lodge offers an authentic cultural and wilderness experience in the heart of Manu National Park Peru.
Face-to-Face with Manu Wildlife
- Our adventure begins very early inside the Manu Reserved Zone, following the visiting schedule established by the park authorities.
- We board a quiet catamaran and explore the dark waters of Cocha Salvador, one of the most spectacular wildlife lakes in Manu National Park. Here, the rainforest comes alive around us.
- With patience and luck, we may observe families of giant river otters hunting and moving through the lake with remarkable coordination. Known locally as lobos de río, these highly social predators are among the most fascinating animals in Manu Wildlife Peru.
- Above the lake, howler monkeys and spider monkeys move through the treetops, while caimans may be seen resting along the shoreline. We then venture into the primary rainforest, surrounded by enormous ancient trees and an extraordinary diversity of plant and animal life.
